The project Integrated waste management and prevention of marine litter in the Western Balkans started in December 2022 and is still ongoing (spring 2025).
The aim of the project is to apply the WasteFlowDiagram tool in four economies of the Western Balkans (Albania, BiH, Montenegro and Kosovo) in order to reduce plastic waste in the Adriatic Sea. In the project, Dekonta cooperates closely with international experts, the MarineLitterPrevention GIZ program team, and representatives of relevant ministries of each partner country, selected municipalities and other relevant stakeholders.
Dekonta played a key role in the realization of the project through several activities. We provided support to international experts in the evaluation of lessons learned from the application of WFD tools in the Neretva, Buna/Bojana basins and the Shkodra region, and collaborated with international experts and relevant parties to identify four areas for the application of these tools. We organized trainings and provided expert advice to selected municipalities on the application of the WFD tool, established a data collection system and prepared reporting formats at the national and regional level.
We have successfully collected data in four countries and prepared reports, visualizing the data to show progress in reducing the leakage of plastic waste into the Adriatic Sea. We also contributed to the preparation of inputs for regional workshops, prepared guidelines for the adaptation of WFD tools at the national level, assessed progress in reducing plastic waste, strengthened regional exchange between municipalities and supported compliance with reporting requirements under the Barcelona Convention.
