The project was conceived as a pilot study, both in terms of the participation of various donors (co-financing by the Slovenian Development Agency, the Federal Environmental Fund, and the Ministry of Spatial Planning and Environmental Protection of Tuzla Canton) and the potential for remediation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The project was carried out in collaboration with KEMIS BH at the Bioremediation Center in Lukavac from January 2020 to March 2021.
The aim of the project was to pilot and establish effective remediation options for the industrial zone of Gikil’s coke factory at the Phenol Factory site in Lukavac. The project was implemented in several phases: sampling, sample analysis and identification of locations for soil excavation, transportation of soil to the Bioremediation Center, soil treatment, monitoring of pollutant concentrations during treatment, returning the treated soil, and developing recommendations for further actions.
