The project was implemented from May 2022 to November 2023.
The purpose of this project is to explore the potential of using treated sludge for the enrichment and rehabilitation of degraded areas where extraction activities have taken place ( including coal, stone, and heavy metal mines), in order to improve soil quality in tailings. The project focused on treating sludge from municipal water treatment plants to a level suitable for application on agricultural land (threshold values were used as for agricultural land, although the treated sludge is not intended for agricultural land, due to the absence of other regulations) and its use in exploited areas.
The positive outcomes of the project indicate that treated/composted sludge meets the threshold values and can be used. The project itself outlines the necessary phases, from treatment to sludge application and subsequent site monitoring.
